playing Michael Chekhov in UNCLE STAN IN BERLIN
written and directed by Dmitry Krymov
off-Broadway developmental workshop at Hunter College
In 1928, Konstantin Stanislavsky saw his star pupil for the last time. Already on the run from Stalin’s Russia, Michael Chekhov came to meet his teacher at a Berlin café for “ten minutes,” and, he later recalled, “ended up spending five hours.” The acting theories they discussed would go on to shape a generation of performance, through Stanislavsky’s “System” and Chekhov’s work in Hollywood. Now, acclaimed director Dmitry Krymov—living in exile in New York following Russia's invasion of Ukraine—restages this iconic meeting as a theatrical investigation of imagination, memory and displacement in a new era of rising autocracy.
